It was the first day of football practice out there at Don Drumm Stadium for the Marietta Pioneers.
It looks to be a strong season ahead for the pioneers. Head coach Andy Waddle and company are coming off of a 6-4 record last season that placed them tied for fifth in the Ohio Athletic Conference.
But even though Marietta is returning a plethora of starters on each side of the ball, including last year’s starting quarterback, Darrien Fields, they were projected to finish sixth in the O.A.C. preseason polls.
Coach Waddle doesn't exactly agree with those polls though, and going into this season his goals are higher than what is expected for them in a conference filled with a lot of talent.
"So obviously I want to be better than what we were a year ago, so a little disappointed on where we are preseason, obviously our goal is to be higher than that, but at the same time it’s the highest we have ever been ranked preseason in my time here, so we are building and continuing to grow and hopefully we will outperform our preseason ranking. I mean our conference is tremendous from the top to the bottom, you've got to be ready to play. I think that what you look at when you look at our conference is a lot of people will pull out one or two teams but I’ll tell you the talent goes a lot deeper than that."
