Shears leads WV Women's Amateur

(ROANOKE, WV(WVGA) – Elizabeth’s Adeena Shears takes the early lead at the 96th West Virginia Women’s Amateur Championship at Stonewall Resort.

The Parkersburg South graduate scored a one under par 71 9 strokes in front of Kimberly Eaton of Charles Town and Isabel Vance of Huntington, who sit in second place with a round of 80.

Shears, a four-time winner of this event, made four birdies and just three bogeys in her opening round. “It was fun”, said Shears, “I enjoy playing in the Women’s Amateur and I’m certainly satisfied with my first round”.

The WVGA’s 2018 Women’s Senior Amateur Champion, Karen Rainey of Daniels, is leading the Low Senior competition with an opening day score of 86. Wheeling’s Dorthy Romanek opened with a score of 85 to lead the field of juniors, but 12-year old Savannah Hawkins of Hurricane is close by with a score of 87.

Round Two gets underway at Stonewall Resort Thursday at 8:00am
