Washington County Sheriff's Office warns of scam

Marietta, Ohio (WTAP) - According to the Washington County Sheriff's Office, numerous residents in Marietta have reported receiving messages from a man claiming to represent the IRS or the Treasury Department.

The suspect has used the names Dennis Gray or David Gray and has threatened to arrest the victim or a family member. The caller is very aggressive and states that if the victim does not immediately send money via wire transfer or prepaid debit card to pay a fine or back taxes, that they will be charged federally or arrested.

In one instance, the caller requested the victim send a money transfer of $6,180. The phone numbers being utilized by the caller in this scam are 551-497-4103 and 567-203-4082.

Neither the Sheriff’s Office nor the IRS conducts official business in this manner and residents are urged to ignore the threats and to definitely not send any money transfer of any kind.
