Obituary: Wakefield, James Reed Smith
James Reed Smith Wakefield, beloved son of Craig Jay Smith Wakefield and Rachel Kathleen Wakefield, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, May 15, 2026. He leaves behind a large and loving family, along with countless friends who were all blessed to know him and are heartbroken by the loss of such a kind, vibrant, and deeply loved young man.
A 2024 graduate of Marietta High School, James distinguished himself academically, athletically, and as a student leader. He served as Student Body President and was also a dedicated varsity athlete who participated in swimming, tennis, and baseball, a sport he excelled at. Following graduation, James joined the Ohio National Guard, serving as a Network Systems Specialist, while also beginning his studies at the University of Cincinnati, where he pursued a double major in music and political science.
James was a strong student, but his interests extended far beyond the classroom. He enjoyed politics, reading, music, and meaningful conversation, and was deeply engaged in the world around him. James also loved creating music and cooking for his family.
Above all else, James deeply loved his family. He was an extraordinary big brother who shared a close and special bond with his younger siblings, Natalie Wakefield and Spencer Wakefield. James was a constant source of support, laughter, and protection for his siblings. Whether offering guidance, sharing inside jokes, or simply being there when it mattered most, he embraced his role as a big brother with immense pride and unconditional love. His presence left an indelible mark on their hearts, and the bond they shared will remain unbroken.
In addition to his parents and siblings, James is also survived by his grandmothers, Linda Smith and Kristin Richardson; grandfather, David Richardson and step-grandmother, Dawn Lemon; uncles, Joshua Smith (Connie), Tyson Kampenhout (Kalei), Deven Kampenhout, Jacob Richardson, and Chase Richardson; his aunts, Jase Tyas and Eliza LaRochelle (Richard); and many incredible cousins and extended family members and friends. James was preceded in death by his grandfather, Jeffrey Smith, and aunt, Anja Richardson.
Though his life was far too short, James will be profoundly missed every single day by all who knew and loved him. His warmth, intelligence, humor, leadership, and compassion will leave a lasting impact on friends and family alike.
A celebration of life will be held in honor of James later this summer. Online condolences may be made at www.hadleyfh.com.
